Composition for reference Nowadays, one of the most serious problems China is faced with is brain drain. While shortages of talent trouble many universities and state-owned enterprises, millions of talented people either emigrate to developed countries or work for foreign companies. At the same time, a big crowd of well-educated people who are determined to follow their footsteps take TOEFL or GRE as their passport to the West. However, people see this phenomenon in different perspectives. Some hold the opinion that China suffers a lot from brain drain. They argue, on the one hand, that brain drain considerably weakens our international competitiveness. On the other hand, they believe that the talent should serve their native country first. In contrast, others highlight the advantages of international exchange and cooperation. They claim that Chinese youths should go abroad to study and gain more experience. What"s more, the long-term benefits will outweigh losses we suffer now. Brain drain poses a challenge. China should go all out to attract talented people in order to better compete in the world. For one thing, decent living and working conditions should be offered to specialists. For another, we have to better develop our economy, which is a sure bait for all kinds of talent.

From the picture given above, we can observe that there are two young men using different ways to show admiration towards their role model. By writing “Beckham” on his face, the man on the left picture expresses his intense enthusiasm for Beckham. Meanwhile, to make himself resemble his idol, the man on the right picture spends 300 RMB making a Beckham’s hairstyle.
The cartoon aims at informing us of the phenomenon that many adolescents admire their role models in an excessive and blind way. Quite a few reasons can account for this: for one thing, with the mass media spreading the positive image of superstars, young people can hardly resist the charm of them. They regard superstars as their examples and desire to be people like them. For another, youngsters’ craze for superstars can also be attributed to the influence of the force of“group dynamics” :when members of their social networks show great enthusiasm for some idols, young people are so easily influenced by their friends or classmates and then imitate the behavior they see. This could be a subtle form of peer pressure.
We cannot draw an absolute conclusion whether idol-worship is good or bad. Sim* imitating role model’s dresses or behaviors, youngsters may lose themselves and it will definitely interfere with their personal life or studies. However, when learning idols’ diligence, spirit and ambitions, young people can transform their worship towards idols into the passion for life, the stimulus to success and the driving force of struggling. Hence, whether idol worship is positive or negative is up to youngsters themselves.
My View on Freeters
Nowadays, the emergence and rise of freeters in China has caught public attention.
Freeters are those who do not have any stable jobs and only earn money hen they are in need of it.
When they have adequate money, they usually do things at their pleasure.
The phenomenon of freeters shows that people can enjoy a flexible schedule nd live a desirable life.
However, there are some potential problems for them.
For one thing, they are always moving and changing jobs; as a result, their welfare can not be guaranteed.
For another, they are less likely to have a long-term career development because of too frequent change of jobs.
Last but not least, they are possibly not aware that what they do is kind of irresponsibility for their family and the society.
To my mind, the rise of freeters manifests social progress.
However, the scale of freeters should be controlled; otherwise it will cause problems.
adequate ["ædikwit] adj. 足够的,适当的,能胜任的
phenomenon [fi"nɔminən] n. 现象,迹象,(稀有)事件
frequent ["fri:kwənt] adj. 经常的,频繁的
scale [skeil] n.
controlled [kən"trəuld] adj. 受约束的;克制的;受控制的" v. 控制;指挥;
flexible ["fleksəbl] adj. 灵活的,易弯曲的,柔韧的,可变通的
social ["səuʃəl] adj. 社会的,社交的
stable ["steibl] adj. 稳定的,安定的,可靠的
potential [pə"tenʃəl] adj. 可能的,潜在的
desirable [di"zaiərəbl] adj. 值得有的,令人满意的,有吸引力的

The Most Important Quality of a College Student
Many people describe their college years as the best time of their lives. However, not every student achieves the same level of success. This raise the question: What is the most essential quality needed to succeed in one‘s higher education?
Personally,of all attributes that can contribute to a successful college career, the most important one is effective time management. To begin with, students who know how to manage their time effectively will be able to ensure strong academic performance. While getting high grades in by no means the only aspect of success for undergraduates, students who fail in most or all of their courses could hardly be considered successful. In addition, time-management consciousness can enable students to become more socially successful. University is not just an academic experience, but also a social one. Students who fail to budget their time and, in turn, fall behind in their studies, will have fewer opportunities to hang out with friends and classmates.
For the above reasons, I believe that time management is the most important quality for a college students.
1. describe A as B 将A描述为B
2. raise the question
5. contribute to 促成
6. by no means 决不
7. budget their time 同义替换manage their time 管理时间
8. hang out with sb.

A nation of non-readers
原文:
MANY Brazilians cannot read. In 2000, a quarter of those aged 15 and older were functionally illiterate. Many sim* do not want to. Only one literate * in three reads books. The average Brazilian reads 1.8 non-academic books a year—less than half the figure in Europe and the United States. In a recent survey of reading habits, Brazilians came 27th out of 30 countries, spending 5.2 hours a week with a book. Argentines, their neighbours, ranked 18th.
In rare accord, government, businesses and NGOs are all striving in different ways to change this. On March 13th the government launched a National Plan for Books and Reading. This seeks to boost reading, by founding libraries and financing publishers among other things. The Brazil Reader Institute, an NGO, brings books to people: it has installed lending libraries in two São Paulo metro stations, and is planning one in a Carnival samba school. It is starting to be common to see characters in television soap operas shown reading. Cynics note that Globo, the biggest broadcaster, is also a big publisher of books, newspapers and magazines.
One discouragement to reading is that books are expensive. At São Paulo"s book fair this week, “O Código Da Vinci” was on sale for 32 reais—more than a tenth of the official minimum monthly wage. Most other books have small print-runs, pushing up their price.
But Brazilians" indifference to books has deeper roots. Centuries of slavery meant the country"s leaders long neglected education. Primary schooling became universal only in the 1990s. Radio was ubiquitous by the 1930s; libraries and bookshops have still not caught up. “The electronic experience came before the written experience,” says Marino Lobello, of the Brazilian Chamber of Books, an industry body.
All this means that Brazil"s book market has the biggest growth potential in the western world, reckons Mr Lobello. That notion has attracted foreign publishers, such as Spain"s Prisa-Santillana, which bought a local house last year. American evangelical publishers are eyeing the market for religious books, which outsell fiction in Brazil.
But reading is a difficult habit to form. Brazilians bought fewer books in 2004—289m, including textbooks distributed by the government—than they did in 1991. Last year the director of Brazil"s national library quit after a controversial tenure. He complained that he had half the librarians he needed and termites had eaten much of the collection. Along with crime and high interest rates, that ought to be a cause for national shame.

In recent years, the volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people, especially among youngsters. According to a survey, in 2008, there were about 1,700,000 volunteers who offered service for Olympic Games. Actually, an increasing number of people become volunteers every year in China。
Volunteering actions are of tremendous benefits to both those in need and the society. Olympic Games are a good example. As is known to all, volunteers played an active role in Beijing Olympic Games. Without them, it would be a tough task to hold this un-precedent Olympic Games. Therefore, we can say that it was those volunteers who ensured the success of these games。
As modern college students, we should get actively involved in volunteering activities. By participating, we can learn how to work well in a team, how to improve our interpersonal skills and organizational ability. Undoubtedly, all of these are critical for our person growth. So, we should take this chance to learn and to grow.
Every individual faces the problem of choosing an occupation after graduating from university, which is of great importance in one’s whole life. An appropriate occupation makes a man work with vigor and zest. Besides, it is beneficial for both the individual and the country。
To make an advisable choice, a graduate should take into account at least two aspects, namely, individual’ interest and the demand of the society. Only when the two aspects are connected, can a man show his ability and talent to the best advantage. If the two factors conflict, the former, in most cases, should give way to the latter, for it is interests that stimulate one’s vigor and potentials。
In regard to my choice in the future, I want to work as an interpreter. I am keen on learning foreign languages, English in particular. Moreover, in the contemporary society, international exchange in economy and culture has been growing significantly. However, competent interpreters are far from enough. So I am determined to be a qualified interpreter。
Blood Donation
Nowadays there is a commonly held belief that donating blood will do harm to a person’s health. Actually, it is not the real case.
On the one hand, the small amount of blood donated will be recovered in a short time.
On the other hand, with the development of medical science, it is much safer and more convenient now for people to donate blood.
Most important of all, donating blood can help save the lives of dying patients, which is significant to the whole society.
We need to carry out several measures to promote blood donation.
First, we should impart medical knowledge to common citizens, convincing them that blood donation is not dangerous at all.
Second, we should help people realize that helping others is equal to helping ourselves, not only because it is a virtue to be ready to help others, but also because one day we will be those in need of help.
convenient [kən"vi:njənt] adj. 方便的,便利的
donation [dəu"neiʃən] n. 捐赠物,捐款,捐赠

As a college student, it is full of meaning to participate in various camps which are beneficial for us. Among the camps I involved before, the English Summer camp held by our university with a small group of Chinese college students as well as some friends from English Spoken countries made me the most impressive。
There are two factors for my belief. For one thing, I expanded my scope of knowledge for the lecture made by a professor of the Harvard University. Though I have been learning English for almost ten years, getting knowledge from foreign teachers can still be something inspiring. I really want to know about current English countries’ culture, such as education, economy, politics and so on. In this way I could know more about the world and it would help me make right decisions when I graduate from university whether going abroad for further study or not. And it would also help me understand more about our own country. The second reason for me is that the activities also changed me a lot, including English corner, English drama play, interesting knowledge competition and the like. Undis*dly, all these activities can not only help us learn more skills but improve our English。
In conclusion, it was my great pleasure to take part in this activity. I do believe that other kinds of outdoor activities would bring us a lot of advantages, so I would make effort to participate in such activities in the remaining years of my college study。

Private Tutoring
A recent investigation shows that about 80 percent of pupils have private tutors.Such a popular practice indicates that people are attaching greater importance to education. Many parents, for various reasons, missed the chance of obtaining a good education. When their children meet with difficulties in study, they are helpless. Private tutoring is the only solution. As private tutoring is usually one-to-one, the teacher knows the strong points as well as the weak points of the pupil clearly.
However, private tutoring has its own disadvantages. For one thing, it takes up so much of the pupils’ time that they can hardly find enough time for rest and entertainment, which are essential for their physical and mental health. For another, some teachers, busy “shuttling” from one family to another, tend to neglect their regular teaching duties. What’s more, some teachers are eager to help pupils do well in the test, offering the so-called tips for test-taking rather than help them acquire what is more meaningful.
Generally speaking, its disadvantages outweigh its advantages. Greater emphasis should be laid on classroom teaching and practice, on the improvement of teaching quality and on the tapping of pupils’ potentials. Only in this way can a new generation be healthily brought up.
